Geraint Thomas puts serious time into Giro GC rivals | Ineos look flawless

Episode notes

Brad is joined by Graham Willgoss and Brian Smith to dissect the first stage of the Giro d’Italia, with the trio concluding that Ineos Grenadiers look a team transformed following their struggles at the Tour de France.

Filippo Ganna looked almost unbeatable, says Brad, as he took the spoils on a 15.1-km individual time trial while Geraint Thomas put time into his rivals on an excellent first stage of the Giro for the British-based team. Both Wiggins and Smith say Thomas - backed up by what they call a brilliant, well-balanced team - looks the outright favourite for the Maglia Rosa.

There is also a look back at the UCI World Championships, and how some riders used the Tour as a tune-up event for the rainbow jersey battle. Brad ponders whether the Great Britain set up needs a shake up after questions are raised over the tactics that led to Lizzie Deignan’s sixth-place finish.

Elsewhere, Mathieu van der Poel’s exploits at the BinckBank Tour could see him miss Sunday’s Liege Bastogne Liege, with Brad asking whether cycling expects too much of the Dutch superstar after his long-range attack on Saturday.

The pod closes with Brad, Brian and Graham lamenting the behaviour of Quinn Simmons who was suspended by Trek-Segafredo last week for what the team called ‘divisive and incendiary’ statements on social media.
