Defend It Yourself continues with a modern day classic: John Carter (2012) in which a American Civil War Veteran ends up on Barsoom (Mars).

Yes, we're serious.

Discussion Points:

-Sean apologises to Sivako: Road To Avatar podcast within minutes.

-Brenda and Sean discuss Avatar (2009), Godzilla Minus One (2023), Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023), and Nope (2022), before the John Carter review begins 10 minutes in.

-Don't compare yourself to other franchises.

-Sean has a nightmare with the names.

-The risk aversion attitude of film studios.

-The great world-building.

-Brenda thinks the runtime could have been shortened.

-The very strong characters in the film.

-The importance of trailers.

Raised Questions:

-How has it been a year and a half since Brenda guested on the podcast?

-Does Brenda need to defend this film?

-Why does Sean always use food analogies?

-Should they have changed the title from John Carter of Mars?

-Should Sean employ Brenda as segway-creator?

-Should Disney have had more faith in the film?

-Why don't they let film directors handle the trailers?

Death of a President (2006) with Ryan and Kevin from 'The Almost Presidents Podcast'

Ryan and Kevin from 'The Almost Presidents Podcast' return to discuss this forgotten British documentary film which depicts the fictional assassination of George W. Bush, in Death of a President (2006).

-Kevin and Ryan discuss their thoughts on the film.

-Sean believes the film could be a comment on the British involvement in the Afghanistan and Iraq wars.

-Sean does a quick-tour of the 'Special Relationship' between American and Britain since the Second World War.

-The clever assimilation of facts from other Presidential Assassinations and Assassination attempts.

-The use of footage from Ronald Reagan's funeral.

-The impact of fear.

-The lack of any lasting impact from this film.

-Ryan and Kevin consider whether the film was too inflammatory.

Raised Questions:

-Did the British film-makers use this film as an analogy for British involvement in 'The War on Terror'?

-Was the film too provocative in it's premise?

-Would it have worked better as a courtroom drama?

-Does the film touch on a lot of subjects, but not dive enough into any of them?

-Wouldn't you find your fingerprints all over the office where you work?

-Why did the set the shooting of Bush outside of a hotel?

-What are the links between this film and Chicago Fire (2012)?

-Do films affect and mould social memory?

-Was the film too of its time?

-Is the film a victim of its own premise?

-Was the film a bit too slow at times?

-Can you ever 'win' when discussing politics?

-Why has Sean been keeping an eye out for Al Gore news?

Random Recommendations:

-The West Wing (1999-2006).

-24 (2001-2010).

-Cheers (1982-1993) Season 1, Episode 16 'The Boys in the Bar', aired in 1983.

I Am Legend (2007) with Sarah from 'Weird Horizon'

I Am Legend (2007) with Sarah from 'Weird Horizon'

"An hour in, this is where I think the film jettisons the thoughtful, melancholic and reflective tone for action and it's all the worse for it."

Sarah from Weird Horizon returns with yet another feel good film, containing multiple dog deaths. No crushed hands this time. Sarah and Sean then do a really in-depth analysis of the film, before watching the alternative ending and give their verdict on it.

Discussion Points:

-Dog deaths in film.

-The hype for this film back in 2007.

-Will Smith's powerhouse performance.

-Reviewing this film in a post-pandemic.

-The shift in the tone of this film.

-The beautiful soundtrack.

-Sarah enjoys the little details of how Robert has survived the last three years.

-Why Sean wants to turn the film off after an hour.

-Expectations versus reality, e.g. the Statue of Liberty's head.

-The strength of the melancholic, slow-burn scenes.

-Sean's version of the third act.

-Sarah and Sean both loved the flashback scenes.

-The lack of single-handed films; 'The Shallows' starring Blake Lively is another good example.

-Sarah believes locking yourself in a room is not a solution.

-Robert's view of the infected as 'monsters'.

-Big American flags.

-Sean sings the American National Anthem.

Raised Questions:

-Does Sean need to introduce himself? (That's not meant to sound pretentious)

-Was 2007 overloaded with apocalypse films?

-Why does Sean insult the majority of his audience?

-Is the CGI egregious?

-Would this film have been better if they hadn't shown the 'monsters' at all?

-Do they waste the hour of build up in the last half an hour?

-Should they have kept Robert Neville as the only human in the film?

-Are you interested in the sequel?

-Which medication was Robert taking after his dog dies?

-What was he saving that bacon for?

-Where is the extended cut of this film, seriously?

-Do the 'monsters' attempt to stay away from Robert?

Zombie Recommendations:

-In The Flesh (2013-2014), a BBC Three TV Series.

-28 Days Later (2002).

-George A. Romero's Land of the Dead (2005).

Demons (1985) with Aaron and Chris from 'Semi-Skeptic' podcast

"I was just blown away by how sh*t yet how good it is at the same time, it is phenomenal"-Chris.

Aaron and Chris from 'Semi-Skeptic' podcast introduce Sean to Lamberto Bava's Demons (original title Demoni).

Discussion Points:

-Aaron and Chris are brutally honest about why they chose this film.

-Aaron thinks this film ranks better than The Shawshank Redemption (1994).

-Sean does his best to lay-out the plot of the film.

-The amazing soundtrack by Claudio Simonetti.

-Sean had issues with the pacing of the film, but applauds the practical effects.

-Do not use this film for pick-up tips.

-The state of modern horror.

Raised Questions:

-Would you rather have brutally honest podcasters?

-Is 'Tony the Pimp' a legend?

-Did Scream 2 rip-off this film?

-Are they pumping pheremones into this cinema?

-Why did the Coca-Cola scene cause so much controversy?

-Why won't we see Demons (1985) at the Cannes Film Festival?

Brightburn (2019) with Sarah from 'Weird Horizon'

Brightburn (2019) with Sarah from 'Weird Horizon'

Sarah from Weird Horizon returns (again) to do yet another cheery, pick-me-up film involving broken hands: Brightburn (2019), a horror-superhero film.

Discussion Points:

-Recommending films when you've never seen them.

-Sarah flirts with watching Reminiscence (2021) and Sean urges her not to give in to temptation.

-Sarah understands why Sean thought she'd like this.

-The strength of the Mam AND Dad characters.

-The power of a simple-yet-effective 90 minute film.

-The impressive acting of the film's young star.

-The end credits song choice.

-Sarah and Sean lament the issues around releasing 'The Last Voyage of the Demeter' (2023) in the UK.

Raised Questions:

-How did Sean convince himself that he'd seen this?

-How good is Rebecca Ferguson?

-Do some of the deaths in this film make Final Destination blush?

-Did you enjoy the small focus of the film?

-What else could the Mam and Dad have tried?

-Why do Sarah and Sean keep watching films with hand injuries?

-Did you appreciate the porridge transition?

For Flux Sake: Doctor Who Series 13 (2021) with Clayton from 'Men Who Like Men Who Like Movies'

For Flux Sake: Doctor Who Series 13 (2021) with Clayton from 'Men Who Like Men Who Like Movies'

Welcome to 'For Flux Sake: Or we watched it so you don't have to'.

Sean and his companion Clayton from 'Men Who Like Men Who Like Movies' bring you their very honest thoughts on Doctor Who Flux, the Thirteenth 'Event' Series.

Disclaimer: This podcast episode is not an attack on anybody who created or starred in the series, and has not been made to offend.

We do not condone any hate towards anybody involved, as we have no doubt they all worked bloody hard to get this series made. This podcast was made purely for entertainment purposes and contains honest opinions about the entertainment value of the show. Or lack thereof.

The opinions in this podcast are purely my own and come from a place of love and passion for the show, and sadness in seeing it struggling in the ratings and having arguably lost it's way somewhat.

Discussion Points:

-The DVD synopsis read-out returns.

-The terrible Halloween props.

-Sean doesn't think he has the energy for this.

-Clayton and Sean try and be fair and balanced.

-The dreadful CGI.

-The Doctor's regeneration.

-The insignificance of Doctor Who during the Jodie Whittaker/Chris Chibnall era.

-The question (Doctor Who?) must NEVER be answered, you fools!

-Sean goes on a rant about what people want from their TV programmes.

-The gulf between idea and execution.

-Village of the Angels episode and why that was the only Doctor Who feeling episode.

-Clayton did not like Once, Upon Time.

-There are some great ideas in here.

-This series felt like homework to Clayton.

Raised Questions:

-Did Sean overpay for the DVD?

-Can you feel your juices flowing Doctor Who fans?

-What actually is the flux?

-What are terrifying forces stirring?

-Why does everything look so cheap?

-Was Jodie Whittaker mis-cast?

-Why is this series so visually different than Whittaker's other series?

-Is this Doctor belittling and unlikeable?

-Why does Sean get poetic when he's bored?

-What did you think of the mouldy bread analogy?

-How do you eat yours?

-Why didn't Clayton re-watch the series?

Defend It Yourself 20: Airborne (1993) with Don and Jordan from 'I Scene It' podcast

Defend It Yourself 20: Airborne (1993) with Don and Jordan from 'I Scene It' podcast

Don and Jordan from 'I Scene It' podcast join Sean to defend Airborne, a 1993 film about inline skating.

Sean couldn't find anywhere to watch the film online.

Basic Plot: Mitchell is a California kid and his rich, awesome parents tell him that a trip to Australia...but his parents send him to Cincinnati (in the middle of winter) to his Aunt and Uncle's. With best mate Seth Green, a jock brother, and a visually attractive female, Mitchell attempts to keep his head above water in his new environment. -Sean thinks Airborne is spelt another way. It isn't.

Jamie from 'Old Shipping Lines' YouTube Channel joins Sean to review The Finest Hours (2016).

My Guest:

Old Shipping Lines YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@OldShippinglines

Discussion Points:

-Sean can't understand why this film flopped, like In The Heart of the Sea.

-The weight of leadership.

-Jamie (who's read the book) really helps explain some aspects of the film.

-The surprising amount of Visual Effects shots.

Raised Questions:

-Why did they make the female character act like that?

-Do you enjoy ships in distress on film?

-Why do some films fail to find their audience?

Defend It Yourself 17: The Pirate Movie (1982) with Jason from 'It's Not That Bad' podcast

Defend It Yourself 17: The Pirate Movie (1982) with Jason from 'It's Not That Bad' podcast

Hello Sailor!

Jason from 'It's Not That Bad' podcast jumps onboard the 'Defend It Yourself' ship to review The Pirate Movie (1982), an Australian musical romantic comedy loosely based on The Pirates of Penzance.

"Think Pirates of the Caribbean crossed with YMCA's 'In The Navy', throw a bit of Baywatch in there, a bit of Grease, a bit of Grease 2, the non-shark bits of Jaws and the dreamlike quality of Scrubs and you're about halfway there".

My Guest:

"It’s the show that does its best to defend the unfairly maligned movies, to find the silver linings in the films deemed “less than great”. Every week, host Jason Whissell is joined by a guest to discuss a movie that has been poorly rated by the critics or by the fans" , description from their website: https://notthatbadcast.com/home/

Discussion Points:

-Bus stops advertisements.

-Taking the context and the time that the film was made into account when watching the film.

-The Pirate King and his fantastic lines, played charmingly by Ted Hamilton.

-There's a lot to be said for a film that just makes you laugh.

-A lot of Jason's examples go completely over Sean's head.

-Sean drops Casualty (1986-Present) trivia but gets his Grease (1978) trivia desperately wrong.

-Sean gets distracted by The Batman (2022) once Jason brings it up. It's been a while.

-Jason and Sean discuss World War Z (2013).

-Sean ironically discusses editing.

Raised Questions:

-Do you believe film critics?

-Did they get past introductions in the 80's?

-Where do the Ninjas turn up?

-How bad does this film look on paper?

-This film got how many many Razzie nominations?

-What does Jason think of the musical score, did it damage the film?

-The self-awareness of the film?

-What do critics want?

-Are films with a long runtime necessary?

-Is this film a perfect 'bad day' film?

Random Recommendations:

-Repo The Genetic Opera (2008).

-House of Wax (2005).

-Bottom (TV Series 1991-1995).

-The Pope's Exorcist (2023).

-Clue (1985).

Ed from 'The Film Effect Podcast' returns for his second dose of Halloween goodness by joining Sean to discuss the much-beloved? Halloween IV: The Return of Michael Myers (1988).

Defend It Yourself 16: Resident Evil (2002) with Nathan from 'The Midnight Screening podcast'

Defend It Yourself Episode 16 finds Sean joined by Nathan from The Midnight Screening podcast to co-defend Resident Evil (2002).

Discussion Points:

-The impact of having played the video games (or not) on your view of the film.

-The CGI cannot be defended, especially the crows and the zombie's face.

-The Resident Evil/Love Actually crossover you didn't know you wanted.

-Sean barely let's poor Nathan get a word in. Sorry Nathan. Please come back and review The Shining (1980).

-It takes almost 20 minutes to get past the opening scene-stick around for the Dark Knight Rises tangent.

-Is this film worth a re-watch?

-Do you care about the characters?

-Does Michelle Rodriguez age?

-Why don't the Doctors come in through the broken windows?

-What was the point in those gas masks?

-Why don't the scriptwriters understand how ID badges work?

-Who doesn't want to see Milla Jovovich roundhouse kick a zombie dog in the face?

-How often do you get a film where the villain genuinely doesn't know that he is a villain?

-How the hell does Sean end up doing a Frank Spencer impression?
