Made The Same Way

Made The Same Way

By HDBI

What happens when a biologist comes face to face with a female MC? Some probing questions, brutal honesty, and lots of rapping about fertilisation. Made the Same Way is a brand new experimental podcast bringing together emerging artists and researchers to discuss science, life, and music.
Each episode challenges a new pair to collaborate on an original creative piece inspired by their conversation. You eavesdrop into the process and hear the final result. A collaborative project between Manchester production company Reform Radio and the Wellcome-funded Human Developmental Biology Initiative.

“We speak of science as one thing, and it’s not. It’s many different things.” In this final episode, hip-hop artist Aubz meets Oxford University scientist Shankar. They’re chatting about everything we’ve learnt over this series. What is human developmental biology and why is it important? Throughout the episode, the pair will write and record an original piece of music inspired by their meeting, exploring science in a brand new way.

This episode may include some discussion of abortion, miscarriage and infertility so please look after yourself - if that isn’t something you’d like to hear, maybe give this episode a miss. We’ve also included some support resources below - just in case.

Where’s the line, where’s the limit?

Where’s the line, where’s the limit?

“What things can we consider to be right and wrong, and who makes that decision?.” Sociologist and writer Marieke meets Mancunian poet and rapper Meduulla. They discuss the ethics of research done with very early human embryos, donated to science by people who have had fertility treatment. Who decides what research is allowed? Where do we draw the line with science? And who should we involve in conversations about it? Throughout the episode, the pair will write and record an original piece of music inspired by their meeting, exploring science in a brand new way.

This episode may include some discussion of infertility so please look after yourself - if that isn’t something you’d like to hear, maybe give this episode a miss. We’ve also included some support resources below - just in case.
