Grave Of The Fireflies with Mike Rianda

Listen on

Episode notes

Sam Clements is curating a fictional film festival. He'll accept almost anything, but the movie must not be longer than 90 minutes. This is the 90 Minutes Or Less Film Fest podcast.

In episode 77 Sam is joined by Mike Rianda, writer and and director of Oscar-nominated animation The Mitchells Vs. The Machines.

Mike has chosen Grave Of The Fireflies (89 mins), directed by Isao Takahata and animated by Studio Ghibli. Released in 1988 in a double bill with My Neighbour Totoro, the film features the voices of Tsutomu Tatsumi and Ayano Shiraishi.

Sam and Mike discuss the challenges of editing a story down to a reasonable run time, the exceptional level of detail in Grave Of The Fireflies, and what Hayao Miyazaki would think of The Mitchells Vs. The Machines
