A Gay and A NonGay

Leaving the Westboro Baptist Church with Megan Phelps-Roper

Listen on

Episode notes

The Westboro Baptist Church, notorious for picketing funerals and spreading homophobia, are one of the most hateful and homophobic Christian organisations in the world. Megan Phelps-Roper was born to hate, joining her family at an anti-Gay picket at just 5 years old. The pain, sadness and shame Megan and her family have caused LGBTQ+ people around the world is difficult to comprehend, but since leaving the church in 2012 Megan has dedicated her life to spreading love, compassion and understanding. In this episode, James and Dan chat to Megan about her journey. This episode contains strong language, offensive ideology and religious rhetoric you may find offensive.

Read #Unfollow, Megan's story about the rarest thing of all: a person changing their mind. It's a fascinating insight into a closed world of extreme belief, a biography of a complex family, and a hope-inspiring memoir of a young woman finding the courage to find compassion for others, as well as herself. We're so proud of our new three part BBC Radio 1 documentary From Gay to NonGay - search Gay Non-Gay on BBC Sounds. Lots of you got in touch telling us about LGBTQ+ life in Northern Ireland so we headed out there with the BBC to learn what it's like to be gay in NI with the pressure of the church and so called 'gay conversion therapy.' Recently the law changed in Northern Ireland and finally they have marriage equality - we are so happy for you!
