Unsettling Origins | Claire Fuller Interview

Listen on

Episode notes

Claire Fuller, who has just been longlisted for this year’s Women’s Prize for Fiction, is our guest author for this month’s episode. Making the most of social distancing rules, Kate met up with Claire at a local park to chat about her new book Unsettled Ground, a beautifully written celebration of the natural world, with long-hidden family secrets to be unearthed. It’s not the first time Claire’s writing has been spotlighted by the publishing industry: her debut novel, Our Endless Numbered Days, picked up the prestigious Desmond Elliot prize in 2015, and her subsequent books, Swimming Lessons and Bitter Orange have also been critically acclaimed. She’s a writer who doesn’t easily fit into a neat genre, although she’s been described by The Times as a modern day Daphne du Maurier. Claire has long been a supporter of libraries, and credits creative writing sessions at Winchester Discovery Centre, her local library, for being a catalyst to her literary career.

Hattie and Kate were joined in their online studio by Hollie from Farnborough Library who recommended Suzanne Collins’ prequel to the Hunger Games trilogy: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. We also talked about the Reading Well initiative – a collection of more than 80 books which have been specially selected for the support and guidance they provide for mental health issues. The collection will be available at all Hampshire Libraries and you’ll also find specially curated online shelves on our BorrowBox app.
