Why Won’t The Royals Return The Stuff They Stole?

Listen on

Episode notes

There’s a scene from the current series of The Crown that many people found jarring.

When Mohamed Al-Fayed buys the former French residence of the Duke of Windsor, Edward the Third, he invites the royals to visit.

Instead, they send an entourage who clear it out of some of the more important royal objects, including the desk at which the then King Edward signed his abdication papers.

But while that story isn’t quite true, many wondered at the audacity of the royal family claiming artefacts from their own history when they hold on to so many of those they’ve collected from the colonies over hundreds of years, objects that some want returned.

Today we check in with Marc Fennell, the host of Stuff the British Stole, to find out out why some things still remain in the grips of the colonial power.
