Episode notes

How can you build a career as a full-time painter? What is it like to sell work directly to art buyers at an art fair? How do US and UK audiences differ? How can you overcome the challenges of shipping and exhibiting your work internationally?

Based in a studio in a thatched Norfolk barn, Alec Cumming is a wonderful painter. He works in the traditional medium of oil on canvas, his paintings feel very contemporary; he draws on a visual vocabulary of shapes and patterns gathered during his travels in India, California and Sri Lanka, and captures what he describes as ‘fleeting moments’ in imagined everyday spaces.

Since graduating with a Fine Art degree in 2007, Alec has successfully forged a career as a full-time artist. He has exhibited his work globally – both independently and with galleries – and now has collectors based across the world. Alec spent many years in Delhi and was the youngest artist to have a solo exhibition with the British Council in India. We spoke about his journey as an artist so far...
