My Dad Stole My Limelight

S3 E8: Julya with Jenna

Listen on

Episode notes

The day this is released is the day you can catch Julya (and past guest Steev Letts) at Hecklers in Victoria for the PRIDE SHOW! *air horn* —please forgive my silliness in getting the date wrong and acting like it wasn’t the same day during recording.

Listening to this after the release day? Check out another show Julya is doing via their IG.

In this episode, I get to meet comedian Julya Van Der Sloot and their friend since childhood, Jenna. Julya discusses their gender and sexuality journey and how it has evolved over many years—and the ways it has depended on their surroundings and the people they are spending time with—reminding us that being around people who are allies or part of the community can help us to accept and lean in to our whole self.

The friendship between these two pals goes way back to a food court, where they unpacked a lot of deep stuff after school one day and have been friends ever since. Honestly, who *doesn’t* relate to after-school food court deep discussions? I so appreciated getting to know Julya and Jenna, and them sharing Julya’s involvement (although disheartening at times being at a catholic school) in creating their school’s first GSA and the hard work and fighting they put in to make that a reality.

This was a really lovely connection for me to make, and I look forward to more of Julya in my life in the future!

Although we in no shape way or form condone violence (so don’t get the wrong idea from the segment, haters) there may be a call out for ways in which Julya can lift a curse in the limelight stealing segment, so ya know, send us your tips for ways we can do that, sans violence.
