The winter of 1997/98 saw some managerial change as Tottenham tried to copy the Arsenal route as Christian Gross arrived brandishing his tube ticket and Chelsea bagged Ruud Gullit with the club in two cup competitions and second in the table.
For all the sides battling it out at the top of the league, it was a stop-start period with a few wins almost always followed up by a fallow spell. Which was ideal for Manchester United who could only be stopped if someone else went on an unprecedented winning run. The bookies might as well pay out...
