In 2017, in the small Bay Area city of Milpitas, CA, Karina Dominguez ran her grassroots campaign for City Council. As a woman of color, single mother, labeled by some as the "Firecracker Lawmaker" and leading a grassroots campaign with a People Over Politics platform, Karina definitely caught my eye. She has a genuine passion for her city and has made it clear she isn't just a politician, but an advocate for the people of Milpitas.
In this episode Karina shares with me her journey as a child of parents who were part of the Braceros Program, growing up in a barrio of San Jose called "Sal Si Puedes" and how her love of that community fueled her desire to passionately create change for the city and people she loves. She candidly shares her struggles, concerns, and desires for advocacy for the people within Milpitas and her hope to create an open, trustworthy city government space for all of it's residents.
