The Ancients

Edges of Empire: The Sasanian Frontiers

Listen on

Episode notes

The Sassanid Empire was the longest enduring Persian dynasty, lasting from the 3rd century AD until the 7th. In this episode, Tristan spoke to Eve MacDonald from Cardiff University about the Sasanian people and the archaeology which surrounds them. This includes the Great Wall of Gorgon, a gargantuan wall between the mountains of Iran and the Caspian Sea built not only for defence but for trade. The wall, sometimes referred to as the Caspian Gates, is the source of many local traditions and the Sasanians are a truly intriguing culture.
