Episode notes

Bryan Slayton owns and operates Bad wRAPs INCarcerated, a food stand based in Chattanooga, TN, that offers innovative food under a unique name inspired from a wrongful conviction that sentenced Slayton to over 30 years for conspiracy to distribute cocaine. Slayton joined The Building Downtown (@TheBuildingDT) hosts Jason Kelly (@JayKellyMMA) and Amy Barton (@amesbelle) to talk about his meteoric success with Bad wRAPs since being released from prison in 2019, growing up in Tennessee during the crack epidemic of the 1980s, how crack cocaine and the laws surrounding it destroyed black communities, the people who framed him and their demise, being on the run from federal law enforcement, being shot when he was eventually arrested, having a less-than-satisfactory public defender represent him in court against the United States of America, adapting to prison life, the horrors and violence he witnessed in prison, achieving a plethora of certificates and becoming a mentor to inmates, being fortunate enough to receive clemency and be released due to being a non violent criminal, coming home to a mother fighting cancer, living in a halfway house, moving into his mom’s house, integrating into society and adapting to the changes of the world during his incarceration, creating Bad wRAPs, working with Urban League, plans to get into politics and help others dealing with incarceration, his plans for Bad wRAPs, and why his name would be Exlax if we were in the 1970s.
