The Phantom Never Dies
The First Superhero
Episode notes
Why do superheroes wear lycra? What’s the deal with superheroes having secret identities? The blueprint for the superheroes you know today be can be traced back to a purple suit wearing, crime fighting, jungle-dwelling hero called 'The Phantom'.
His presence on the page helped undermine the Nazis in World War II, became a superhero revered by Indigenous communities globally and at one point was read by more than 100 million people daily... So why don't more people know who he is!?
In this first episode we take you back to the beginning of it all. The year is 1936, we're chilling in America and a young dude by the name of Leon Gross (who would soon take on the pen name Lee Falk) created the purple suited masked vigilante who would become the blueprint for the superheroes you know and love. And that’s just the beginning.
