Episode notes

The levelling up agenda finds itself up for debate in the Tory leadership race - as social issues take root in some parts of the north and a cost of living crisis rumbles on the horizon.

This week, The Mill’s Joshi Herrmann speaks to leading economist and Bennett Professor of Public Policy at the University of Cambridge Diane Coyle to ask: what would real levelling up look like?

Diane’s story begins in the north, having grown up in Ramsbottom, and has taken her from economics editor at The Independent to working with the treasury. She has dedicated her working life to asking how the de-industrialised towns of the north can be more productive, how to bring back well-paid jobs and how to increase the quality of life in economically uncertain times.
